amminal is a new group featuring Pippin Barnett on drums, Adam Hopkins on bass, Stephen Williams on guitar and vocals, Bryan Hoffa on guitar, synth, banjo and vocals, and Phil Murphy on guitar and vocals. Phil has been writing songs for the last couple of years that draw from fingerstyle and British folk (Fahey, Fairport Convention, Pentangle), as well as the pop and jazz music he grew up with. In the last fifteen years Phil immersed himself in the musics of the Middle East and North Africa, lived in the Moroccan city of Fez and studied Moroccan Sufi song and poetry. All of these influences combine and intertwine with the sounds produced by the other four amazing musicians in this new lineup to create a sound that one non-existent reviewer described as 'Yacht-Gaze."

Curt Sydnor's 'Fall of Richmond' @ Gallery 5

Excited to hear Curt’s new work, and also join him and Laura Ann Singh on a few of his great songs that we’ve recorded together. This is a free event, don’t miss!

TICKETS

On Sunday, April 2 Classical Revolution will premier The Fall of Richmond, a new chamber symphony by composer Curt Sydnor which evokes the turmoil and exultation which overtook Richmond on April 2-4,1865 as Confederate forces burned and abandoned the city. Composed in Richmond during the protests of 2020, the work is an ode to the US Colored Troops regiment which led the march into Richmond, to President Lincoln’s famous visit the following day, and to the concurrent liberation of Richmond’s enslaved population. Gallery 5’s stage backdrop and historic walls will be illuminated with projections of Richmond’s ruins (as photographed by Matthew Brady and others) to create an immersive musical-historical environment. Conductor Naima Burrs will lead the nine-piece ensemble comprised of Richmond’s finest classical musicians, including members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. The program will also include premiers of Sydnor’s Chaconne for violin, bass, and piano and a song setting for chamber ensemble featuring Laura Ann Singh. For Virginia music lovers, this one-time event is not to be missed.

There are not a lot of venues presenting jazz and creative music in Richmond at the moment, and we are hoping this series offers an opportunity for musicians to try out new ideas in a low key and laid-back environment. We're very much hoping for this to be a regularly monthly thing, so please come check it out so we can get some momentum behind it! Scott and Adam will each present music for the first week, and future months will feature some of Richmond's finest. Check back for updated schedule as we get this rolling.
